Patient Transport Management at Hospital Nova with the 9Solutions System
The 9Solutions system for managing patient transport has been in use at the Central Finland Hospital since 2019. The new Sairaala Nova in Jyväskylä opened in January 2021. The hospital spans over 106,000 gross square meters and employs more than 2,000 people. Currently, the 9Solutions solution enables centralized internal patient transfers throughout the hospital, managing up to 2,500 patient transport orders per week.
From Decentralized to Centralized Patient Transport Management
Before implementing the 9Solutions patient transport management solution, transport was handled in a decentralized manner, with nursing staff providing the service from their respective units. In practice, nurses placed transport orders by phone, and these were recorded on sticky notes. Departmental staff coordinated patient transport between departments and procedures, a challenging task that was further complicated by continuous phone calls that disrupted both staff and patients.
Now, nurses can order patient transport from their workstations using a single app, and transport staff receive the orders directly on their phones. Each order includes patient details, location information, and other relevant transport data. Transporters can reserve the nearest available task from their mobile app’s task list. Once a transporters accepts a task, the information is updated for the requester and other people, simplifying organization and reducing redundant work.
Enhanced Efficiency and Reduced Workload
Miia Paatola, Head of Material Management at the Central Finland Healthcare District, is pleased with the solution: “It has enabled centralized management of patient transport because the entire system can be controlled through a single interface. It is user-friendly, informative, and provides an overview of all orders. Transporters no longer need to pick up paper notes from a desk or return to ask for their next task. With the mobile app, they can view transport orders and select the nearest one. This saves time as they can continue from their current location without needing to travel back and forth over long distances,” Paatola explains.
Centralizing patient transport management streamlines and simplifies work for all parties, saving valuable time for nursing staff. Currently, patient transport management at Sairaala Nova is handled by a team of 19 people working in three shifts around the clock. Nurses no longer spend their time transporting patients and can instead focus on caregiving.
